Shelter in Place: Day 58

Good Evening, Friends,

It’s me again.

Today is Thursday, May 14th, 2020.

First, a shout out to my sister for completing her master’s program at Washington University in St. Louis! I’m so proud of you and excited for you. I know that the future is uncertain at this moment, but I know that you are a thoughtful human and I trust you to do what is best for you and the world.

Today was a good day. I vacuumed and rearranged my room. I wrote a little bit more fiction. I sang songs to Scout.

Time doesn’t seem to be passing, but it is. In a heartbeat or an eon I will be moving to Idaho. I am nervous, but I am also hopeful. I am hopeful that I will really be able to improve my craft, share my writing with my cohort and professors, reach a deeper understanding of the purpose and production of fiction.

I still believe fiction is a worthwhile endeavor. It allows us to imagine a different world and thereby make it a nearer reality.

I had a dream last night that I think will illuminate my thought process more clearly: I was a magician, with the capability of shaping the world around me. A group of evil magicians were plotting something nefarious. I set out to defeat them. At one point I was attempting to hold a door shut with my magic. As I felt the door shuddering, trying to open, I remembered that I was dreaming. I remembered that I could shape the dream as I saw fit. I held the door shut. I was triumphant.

That ability to see the possibility of change. The ability to wake us up to reality. That’s what fiction provides.

I’ll see you all tomorrow.

Much love,
